Hi, They can not be used on a public network, only on Home or Work network. (ie. 1 PC acting as ICS is deemed as public. ) To have Home or Work network you will need to connect the Lan cable from the PC with ICS (internet connection sharing) to a routers Wan port. Then connected all other computers to the routers lan ports. Then you will have 2 networks ( 1 Public and 1 Home or Work. ) You will now be able to use File and Print sharing. slan go foill, Paul

the internet scheme i use is: USB DSL modem --> desktop computer --> laptop via crossed LAN cable i can mark the dsk connection as HOME or WORK but i can't assign the LAN connection as HOME because it's marked as unidentified on the desktop on the laptop side the LAN network is marked as HOME and the ICS is working (LAN is set to manual) i don't believe it's an issue of public/home but rather one of policies / service dependencies the problem probably resides with the PC windows because i just reinstalled it zminin dot com

can anyone help please? again the scheme is: USB DSL INTERNET ------> DESKTOP PC (Windows 7) --lan--> LAPTOP (Windows 7) the settings for the DESKTOP PC are: as you can see the LAN network appears unidentified on the desktop PC even though its set to ICS using the ip 192.168.0.1 to share the DSL connection the settings for the LAPTOP are: the problem is i can't manage to turn sharing on, that's to say after i enable it from the advanced sharing, the settings do not save. i can access a shared laptop drive from the dekstop but not the other way around (i can't share anything).zminin dot com

Hi, Let's perform the following steps to troubleshoot the issue. 1. Upgrade the NICs driver on each machine. 2. Obtain IP address automatically on each NICs. a. Click "Start", input "NCPA.CPL" (without quotation marks) and press Enter. b. Right click on the connection on the host computer that you use for the Internet connection, and then click "Properties". c. Click to select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)", and then click "Properties". d. Check "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically". e. Click "OK". f. Please repeat the above steps on another connection on the host computer and the client computer. 3. Temporarily turn off firewall on each machine. If the issue persists, please collect the following information on each machine for research. a. Click the Start Button and type "cmd" (without quotation marks) in the open box. b. Right click CMD and click "Run as Administrator" option, and then click Yes. c. In the open command window, input the following command and press Enter Key after it. Ipconfig /all >C:\pingresult.txt d. Please open Computer and navigate to C:\ folder to find the "pingresult.txt" file and post the result here. e. Please repeat above steps to collect IP information on the client computer. Thanks, Novak

I had a similiar issue where I couldn't save my "Turn on file and printer sharing" advanced sharing option. Turns out I had disabled (set to manual or disabled) the "Security Accounts Manager" service, which prevents the "Server" service from running, which prevents saving of this. My solution was to simply change the "Security Account Manager" service start up type back to "Automatic." Hopefully this helps someone else...
